This month we are celebrating Private First Class Gino Merli and Staff Sergeant Joseph Schafer, 18th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division for their conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty which earned them the Medal of Honor. PFC Merli made the ultimate sacrifice September 4, 1944 near Sars la Bruyere, Belgium, during World War II. SSG Schaefer made the ultimate sacrifice September 24, 1944 near Stolberg, Germany, during World War II
