Fireman 2nd Class Joseph Carroll Interment Ceremony B-Roll
Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency
Aug. 21, 2024 | 3:33
U.S. Navy sailors assigned to Navy Region Hawaii participate in an interment ceremony at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii, August 21, 2024. The ceremony honored the life of Fireman 2nd Class Joseph William Carroll, missing from World War II. Carroll entered the U.S. Navy from West Virginia and served aboard the USS Oklahoma (BB-46). He was lost when the Oklahoma sank during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Carroll's remains were recovered from the ship following the battle, but they could not be individually identified at the time and were eventually buried as unknowns at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. In 2015, advances in forensic tools prompted unknown remains associated with the Oklahoma to be exhumed and brought to the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. Carroll was eventually identified from among these remains. (U.S. Air Force video by Staff Sgt. Cole Yardley)
