West Loch Project Disinterment B-roll
Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency
Nov. 4, 2024 | 9:13
B-roll from a Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) West Loch Project disinterment ceremony. On May 21, 1944, a devasting ordnance accident in the West Loch of Pearl Harbor wounded hundreds and killed at least 130 service members, making it one of the most severe non-combat disasters in U.S. military history. Those that couldn’t be identified were buried as unknowns at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (NMCP), Honolulu, Hawaii. DPAA is actively disinterring those remains in order to achieve the fullest possible accounting. Approximately 82 service members are still unaccounted for from the tragedy. Includes footage of NMCP personnel excavating caskets, the disinterment ceremony, and the unloading of the caskets at DPAA facilities.
