Army Reserve soldiers of the 4224th U.S. Army Hospital, Des Moines, Iowa, partnered with Air Force Reserve Airmen active duty Navy and Army personnel and the Delta Regional Authority to provide medical and dental care to resident of the Mississippi River Delta Regional Authority to provide medical and dental care to residents of the Mississippi River Delta.
The IRT mission was called the ”Mississippi Medical Project,” a multi-location project with six site, two in Arkansas and four in Mississippi. The project was based at the DRA headquarters in Clarksdale, Miss., the city credited as the birthplace of the blues music that describes life in the Delta region.
The project provided medical, dental, optical and veterinary services to more than 5,000 local residents. The services included diagnostic screening for high blood pressure and diabetes and eye exams and new glasses, at no charge.
