The Coast Guard was created 234 years ago on Aug. 4, 1790, as the Revenue Marine Service, when the first Congress authorized Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton to construct ten vessels, known as "revenue cutters," to combat smuggling and enforce tariff laws. In 1915, Congress combined it with the U.S. Life Saving Service and rechristened it as the United States Coast Guard. (U. S. Coast Guard video by Petty Officer 1st Class Brandon Giles)
